GREENLAWN CEMETERY

Greenlawn Cemetery was originally chartered on May 5, 1905.   The Gromiller Family founded and operated the cemetery, with a board of directors, until it was transferred to St. Michael’s Church in 1982.

At the beginning, the cemetery was not connected to a church and thus was not any particular religious denomination.  When the cemetery was transferred to the church, it became a Catholic Cemetery of the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown.

All lots purchased prior to the transfer will be honored.  Lots sold in the future will be to Catholics and members of their families.

The cemetery is governed by a committee consisting of the pastor, Fr. Gardner, and five trustees: James Shoemaker, Joseph Dodson, Thomas Sutch, Thomas Baker, and Daniel Moringiello.

Lots can be purchased for one person or for more than one.  A lot contains ten grave spaces.  As of November 1, 2007, each burial space is $300.  Burials can be either full burial (containing a vault) or cremation.  A person to be buried must have a burial space, which has been paid for prior to burial.

Opening and closing of a burial space is paid for at the time of burial.  Currently, this fee is $700.  Cremation burials are $200.  Every burial, regardless of type, must have a burial permit, which is obtained through a funeral director.

Once a person has obtained a burial space, a set of by-laws will be given that explains all of the rules of the cemetery.

If you are interested in purchasing a burial space, please contact one of the committee members and arrange for a meeting at the cemetery to determine your site.  You can visit the cemetery by driving North on Montgomery Street toward the Senior High School.  When you reach the end of North Montgomery Street, turn left until you come to a fork in the road.  Then take the left fork into the cemetery.
